Lectionary Reading – John 7:37-52

This passages discusses how the pharisees were beginning to considering holding Jesus accountable for the things He was saying.  In the passage, Nicodemus suggests to the folks that Jesus can not be fairly judged.  This is appropriate because it is not good to judge folks because we just don’t know all the details like God does.

The other day I was in the post office mailing abot 25 boxes and a man came into the post office and just chewed out the clerk, and then the manager because he was receiving junk mail in his P.O. box and wanted the post office to stop allowing that junk mail into his mail.  Well, the Post Office can not determine what goes into his mail, nor should they.  Imagine if postal workers had authority to determine what mail received.  Regardless, this man was very mad and really kind of made a fool of himself in front of many folks in the post office.

I kind of wonder if there wasn’t something else that was bothering him because getting that angry over something like junk mail doesn’t seem very normal to me.  It’s not like anybody was intentionally hurting him or anything.  I did kind of see his point about the junk mail, but it just isn’t that big of a deal.  We will never know if there was more bothering him, but it is important for us to not come to judgment on the person.  There is a reason that Jesus teaches us not to judge.
