UMC-SC- John D. Landis Pastor

There are probably a number of people here today who would rank one of their greatest experiences in life as being at a stadium watching their team win the championship. Perhaps it was the Tigers winning the world series or U of M, or MSU taking the national championship. Some of us are not going to forget that this year Swartz Creek had a winning season after 20 some years of a losing record. There is a certain excitement and thrill at the stadium that grabs all of us. The writer of the Hebrews had seen this in his day too. There were arenas all over the Greek and Roman world with Olympic sports and other games. He used the stadium image to make a strong point.

He said that we as Christians are on the field and there is this enormous crowd watching us. Who is watching us? It is the heroes of the faith he talked about in chapter 11. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses…let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1a Now I don’t know how all that works, but somehow God gives people up in heaven a view of what is going on down here. I have had some moments when I felt as if loved ones gone on were watching me, maybe you have too. I think they are cheering us on.

Some of us here have been on sports teams and you know what it is like to hear the roar of the crowd, the surge of excitement, and the adrenalin rush you get. Having a crowd makes any sport exciting. It leans towards boredom if only about 10 people are there. The athlete needs to know that their effort is appreciated. We are the same way. Whether it is sports or life, we want to know that someone notices, that we are appreciated and making a difference. I know how much all of us need affirmation, and I do my best to let people know about it when they give of themselves in acts of service, in their job, in sports and of course ministry. I hope you do the same.

I was watching a fall pre-season college baseball game a few weeks ago. I noticed the chatter going on. I said to my daughter you know baseball has its own language. You’ve heard them humma humma humma, hum baby, get em out now one two three. Every single person that does a great thing is praised on the field and in the dug-out. Even when someone messes up other players say ok ok, that’s alright lets get back in the game, we’ll do better next time. The sign of a great team is when there is support for every player on every play. We are a team too.

The Sunday school teacher needs to know that their lesson was helpful, the singer needs to know that their song was beautiful, the custodian needs to know that church looks good, the youth needs to know that their work project is important, the tons of volunteers around here need applauding. We all need to know that we are making a difference. And our purpose for living should be to live for God in such a way that we are making a difference. Every person here can touch someone else and bring hope and healing. What we do everyday in our faith walk does have an impact. Every day you and I are in the arena of life. Here is what I think God wants us to do.

I. Live Your Live As If Everyone is Watching!

Not only is there a cloud in heaven but there is a cloud of people around us everyday who are watching what we do, how we live, and what we say. Either we will live with good deeds and good words that honor God, and bless others or we will fail to make the goal. When we stand in the grocery store and people are getting antsy waiting in line, with 20 or 30 people backed up in the lines there is a crowd watching. You might have an opportunity to help an older lady, pick up something that has dropped, and say a kind word when others are tense.

We are always looking for the big opportunity to let our light shine, but such a simple thing as the way you drive through a parking lot can show people you are a caring person. People are usually in a hurry. If you are willing to let people walk through before you park, give someone else the right space, wave and smile it is a witness. I have seen people shouting and yelling at one another at the gas station because they were competing for the same space. If as believers we give up our rights God can give us an opportunity to let our light shine. But if you are mean and ornery it could just be to a person who has visited our church. They might say I will not go back there again.

You and I have an opportunity to score a goal for God every day with acts of service, random acts of kindness, prayerful thoughts, and kind wishes to others. When you are at home, seize the moment with your kids to show special love. Youth and children show special appreciation for what your parents have done. When we come to worship and give a friendly handshake, when you ask someone how are you, or when you promise to pray for someone, you are making a huge difference in someone’s life. Just common everyday faith mixed with love can make you a powerful instrument for God.

In the movie Radio, it tells the story of a young man, James Robert Kennedy who became the hero of the town of Anderson, South Carolina. Though he was mentally handicapped, he showed so much enthusiasm for the game of football and kindness to the people of the town, that he became the most famous citizen. One teacher said, “It doesn’t matter how bad your day is going, he comes up and gives you a hug and says ‘I love you’ and the bad day is washed away.” His life has drawn numerous ovations.

Just simple everyday living with faith, before the cloud of witnesses around us can change the world. We can be a bright light for Jesus Christ. When we live out our faith daily with kindness and love people go home and say you know that Fred and Janet they are really special people. They just lift you up and they really beam with the love of God. Now we do not want to receive the applause of others just for ourselves, but to honor our Lord. In ways we don’t understand heaven is watching too. Jesus I know for sure is watching you. When we live as we should others see Jesus in us and Jesus says well done thou good and faithful servant. The principle is so simple, but sometimes it is so hard. The writer says that often there are things weighing us down, keeping us from live freely for God. There are heavy things we carry, burdens and baggage. So we have to…

Lay Aside Everything That Slows Us Down.

The track runner uses the lightest shoes he can find. The hiker, carries only the most necessary items in the back-pack. If we are going to run the race and to walk the walk we have to remove anything that hinders us. I remember in high school track having a training day in a rainy and snowy spring. It was so cold we wore sweat suits. But as we ran the snow and rain sloshed up on our pants. By the time we finished 12 laps of 400 yards each, my sweat-suit had gained what felt like the weight of a bowling ball. I was in pretty good shape, but I after that work out I could not move for about ½ hour.

The bible says that the weight and encumbrances that hold us back is sin. Let us lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely. Hebrews 12:1b. What is holding you back, pulling you down? Are you still carrying hurts of the past? Are you thinking folks are against you because of the way people treated you in the past. Maybe they are not. Are you holding on to some resentment of what a person said or did to you and now it is this giant load on your back and you can hardly take a step without thinking about it. Let it go. Forgive them. Give them to God.

Often what is holding us back from the race is our own faulty thinking our own wrong attitude. And amazingly it is not always the big stuff, but it is the attitude we carry around with us everyday on the small stuff. It is how we react to the day to day stress that determines the direction of our day. How do we respond when someone is late? What happens when something you have done does not work out so well? What is your reaction when things go wrong?

On the journey, life is full of bumps in the road, cracks in the pavement, and twists on the highway. Can we count the blessings in the midst of the little stuff that goes wrong? Can we look at the big picture and not sweat the small stuff? Shake off that baggage. Sometimes when you end up on what seems to be the wrong path it ends up leading you to something better then what you had hoped for.

The writer says that some things so easily entangle us. Just as a cross-country runner has to watch getting entangled in obstacles, sometimes our life’s circumstances get us entangled. The work place can be very difficult. Mangers don’t understand what we do. Jobs are given that have impossible time limits. It can work on your blood pressure. It can give you ulcers. We cannot always change what is expected of us at work, or the difficult environment we are in, but we can change our preparation for the day. We can change our environment after we leave. We have to accept that some things are far from perfect. Let God handle it. When we do that we get rid of that baggage or entanglement that is tripping us up.

Thirdly if we are going to run the race we must realize when things go wrong that…

God is Seeking to Teach us Something.

The writer uses the word discipline. We had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live?…He disciplines us for our good that we may share his holiness. Hebrews 12:9,10

One of the most important places that we learn how to have love, patience and understanding is in the family. Families share home, food, money, time, clothing, and sleeping hours. Sometimes there is a conflict about how money is to be spent, how time is to be used, and how we communicate with one another. We have to learn to hear the others viewpoint that is different then ours with patience. Sometimes it feels like we are losing ground. Then we have to trust God. We feel a type of discipline.

We have to trust that God is teaching us and those that we love. The frustrations can be so deep that any change appears to be hopeless. You may not be able to change a family member or friend no matter how hard you try. But all things are possible with God. Someone told me this week that their young adult child who was very irresponsible and immature was a changed person after they went on a mission trip. They learned so much more responsibility. Some-times all we can do is be a light and pray and trust God to change someone in another setting. But being a light and praying is sometimes what is most important.

And when we get weary we can’t give up. The bible says that we are to straighten the drooping arms and make straight paths for your feet. When a runner gets tired the arms start to drop, and their feet start to falter. There must be a conscious effort to lift the arms, and to keep the feet on the right path on the track. You and I sometimes have to make a decision to give more effort when it seems like we just can’t. I ran the 440 yard race. There was a point when we got about ¾ ‘s of the way around the track when your body was screaming I can’t keep this up. I am so tired, my arms are drooping and my feet are faltering. And I have to make a decision. Am I going to go down deep and summon something that I don’t even know if it is there or not and finish the race strong. Or will I fade?

Well there was this guy at the ¾ mark who knew the race and would stand there to encourage you. He would say to me and all the other runners ok, now you can do it, give everything you have got, and you will win this race. Of all the people in the stands, I looked for this guy. The amazing thing is I did not even know him, but when he would speak those words a warm feeling would come over me. I would give everything that I had. We won many races in the mile relay. I think it is Jesus that is in the great crowd of spectators, speaks to us when we want to give up. We have tried everything we know… He says don’t give up, I am with you I will help you. Sometimes He may even have to run the race for us.

The writer of Hebrews says…

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:2,3 We must…

IV. Look to The Example of Christ

In the race we are to fix our eyes on Jesus. He is the one that called us to the race, He is the author of our faith. He is also the one who will see us through. He will perfect us, He will help carry the burden. Jesus won the victory for us. He received the prize and now we can also. You know if you have a track team with a champion runner, he can often win the meet for the whole team. He can run the race so fast that no one can beat him. He can make up for the losses on the relay team. He will get first place in everything he does. That is our Jesus. He ran faster and harder then anyone.

Jesus defeated all the competition. Now we are victors through Him. You cannot win by yourself, but you can win with Him. Are you trying to do it by yourself today, forgetting His strength, and not listening to His encouragement. When you feel like giving up, think of what Jesus endured on the journey. He put up with the failure of others. His disciples were always letting Him down, but He kept on praying for them and hoping in the work of the Holy Spirit. He put up with people who twisted what He said, and spoke evil against him all the time. He endured those who ridiculed His work. Finally they nailed Him to the cross.

The bible says we have not endured on the journey as much as He did. So let Him strengthen you when you are misunderstood, when people judge our motives wrongly, and when those around you fail. Like Jesus, endure the cross that you are given. Look to the joy laid before you in your reward in heaven. God will elevate you and bless you when you endure and trust Him, when you do the right thing.

Message: A Faith That Sees Results

Scripture: Hebrews 11:4-7, 23-28

Sunday October 18, 2009

UMC-SC, -J.D. Landis, Pastor

This is the harvest season.  We are seeing pumpkins, squash and corn-shocks everywhere. It is a sign of the bounty of the earth.  I heard that some farmers in Michigan are having one of the best years ever.  When a farmer works so hard getting the ground ready, nurturing his crops, and harvesting it is so great to have results.  I saw a picture of a man from Africa, and his corn crop was withered with barely 10 kernels per ear.  It was so sad. The farmer likes results and so do we.

When we put a certain amount of effort into something we want to get something back. That’s true with our jobs, our homes and family.  It is also true of our faith.  You want to see results don’t you? You want to know that God hears, answers, and provides.  You and I don’t want just a few paltry kernels on the fruit of our faith, but we want to see a great abundance. Today we are going to look at faith that gets results.

One of the things I see God showing us is..

I. Don’t Forget.

It is so easy to forget things isn’t it.  Sometimes we feel like if our head were not attached we would forget it.  I have to keep lots of lists.  I like to think that is because I have a lot running through my head, but sometimes it seems to be just air. But there are important life changing things we need to burn into our hearts like a chisel into granite, so we do not forget.

In some sense you can view the whole Old Testament as a message God’s people, that they were not to forget what He had done. Don’t forget our agreement or covenant God says, don’t forget what I have done, and don’t forget that I promised to take care of you over and over.  The Lord says over and over what I did before I can do again.  When the children of Israel had entered into the promised land, and they were afraid of other nations, God said to them “do not be afraid just remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt, the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord brought you out.” Deuteronomy 7: 18,19.  God said if they were attacked again they could expect the same protection if they trusted and obeyed.  If God was awesome 10 years ago He can be awesome again today.

Think back of what God has done for you by faith.  Did he lead you to the right husband or wife?  Then He can do that for your children.  Did he get you through a difficult surgery?  Then He can do that again.  Did He provide for you financially when you tithed before?  Then He can do that again.  Did He get you through a pretty difficult relationship and iron things out?  Then He can do that again.  Did He bring someone who was far from God to know Jesus as their Savior?  Then He can do that again.  Now sometimes God leads us in a direction different then we want to go, but He still has a plan.

Someone says, but why does it have to be so hard? God puts us through testing times for our faith, so that we can be stronger when the next faith challenge comes.  So that we can have less anxiety and more confidence. James 1:3 says, the testing of our faith produces endurance.  The Greek word also means steadfastness and persevering.  When I think of these words I think of hanging in there.  Taking the next step even though we are not always certain of the outcome and doing something over and over so that we do it well.

My son David was reading a book entitled, “The Outliers”  It said that to really excel you have to reach the magic number of 10,000.  They found that people who were at the top of their field repeated things this much. Tremendous pianists put in 10,000 hours of practice, and great basketball players did the same.  Michael Jordan would shoot the ball thousands of times in a week.  Bill Gates said before the world hardly knew there was a computer that he had clocked 10,000 hours of work at a University in Washington.  Maybe that is why John Wesley was so powerful.  He preached over 20 thousand times in his lifetime.  Most preachers probably only probably do it around 5,000.

Having a faith that yields results occurs when we remember every day what God can do, and we practice it over and over. If we trust God once then forget to do it again that is inconsistent, that is going backwards.  To only practice our faith sporadically it gets dull and unresponsive.  Maybe there was a time when you trusted God everyday, but now you have forgotten.  Your faith is sluggish, out of tune, off the mark, and quite numb. Where do you need to trust God where you trusted Him consistently before?  Sometimes people have bad habits they overcame by faith, but then they came back.  The bad part about habits that come back is that often they grab us even stronger.  Jesus said when the demon returns he brings 7 more.

Somebody overcame smoking, but drifted back to it and they are having all kinds of health problems. Somebody overcame overdrinking, but now they are abusing it again and the family is falling apart.  Somebody overcame angry outbursts, but now they are flying off the handle all the time and nobody wants to be around them.  Somebody overcame depression, but now they are really down again. Cannot God use the same faith you had before.… again.  Retrace what you did.  Say God I am going to trust you again.  You blessed me before, give me hope again.  To live again to hope again is a wonderful thing.

I was ministering in one church, and I came in contact with a fellow who was really strung out. His marriage was falling apart, his kids were rebelling, his job was on hold and he was turning to alcohol.  He cried and told me of a time when he once walked with the Lord as a younger man.  Somehow in reconnecting with our church his faith began to well up in his heart again.  He went through the wringer as his wife left him, but he began to study his bible faithfully, and to worship God weekly. The faith of his youth was coming back.  He remembered again and God used Him again in others lives. He felt a call into the ministry. He became a local pastor in the United Methodist Church. It is never too late.  If you are still breathing God can breathe faith into you.

II. Secondly To See Results We Must Get in the Right Position.

Sometimes we cannot see faith work because we are not in the right place or the right posture. God told Abraham get out of the Ur of Chaldees. He wanted Abraham to leave his cherished homeland and family for a place where God could bless him. He could have exercised all the faith in the world, but he would not have been in the place God wanted Him.  God knew that the influence on Abraham in Chaldee would not allow him to grow into the leader He wanted. I have often, thought that if I had not been willing to move from my family and friends in Pennsylvania to the place God had for me in Michigan, that I might not have known the blessings I have seen.  The people I have met here, and the ways they encouraged me and challenged me made all the difference.

God may be calling some of you to change your position. Now many of us are in a position where friends and family are encouraging us to be everything we should be.  But some this morning might be in a place where friends and people you hang out with are pulling you down.  God wants you to be with people who will build your faith up. I have watched people drift from God completely because they allowed someone close to them even family members to pull them away.  How about you are there influences in your life that are not good?

It was so important to Jesus that we alone no-one to pull us from Him that He said if anyone will follow me they must hate their family. Everybody gets all hung up on that.  Jesus was not saying to hate anybody, but He was saying if they are pulling you from me, then you must resist that very forcibly.  To some family members when you really become committed to God, it may actually look like you don’t love them. Oh stay home with me today dear, don’t go to church.  We will sleep in then have coffee, read the paper and we will have our favorite breakfast, go for a walk.  I need you dear…it takes so much time to get ready for church and then you are gone for an hour and a half, it seems to take our whole morning.  If you really loved me you would stay. We must love our family to pieces, but not allow anyone to keep us from God.

Now there is another side to this too. We can get so busy that we are ignoring our family, and that is really bad, but I am talking about situations where family members don’t even want a Christian to be involved in fellowship at all.  But God wants us to set aside time with Him.  We need time alone with Him, and we need time in fellowship, study and worship with others.  Don’t let anyone move you out of that position.

Another person who learned to get in the right position for God to bless his faith was Moses. Think about what would have happened if he had not obeyed God speaking to him at the burning bush.  God said I want you to leave your comfort zone.  I want you to go and reach a whole nation of people.  The numbers have really grown since you were there Moses, and the trouble in the land has grown too.  I want you to bring them to me.  You are going to have to live a different life.  You will no longer be a shepherd of sheep, but you will lead people.  I am going to send you where it will not be so comfortable, but I will bless you.

There is a message here for us as a church. We have to get out of our comfort zone.  Like Moses there is a huge population out there that God wants us to bring to Himself, to know God.  But the statistics are that fewer people are worshiping every Sunday.  Churches do not always do their job.  Do you know there are 5,000 United Methodist churches that are just on the edge of dying right now?  And there are far more then that of every denomination.

Why so many churches about to collapse? They are not reaching new people.  They did not want to get out of their comfort zone.  They wanted things to be the way they always were.  They were happy with just the folks that were familiar with.  Unlike Moses they didn’t want to move out into a different position. We have got to open ourselves up to God and get in the right position.  We have got to reach a whole group of people that are outside the faith.

Our world is changing quickly. We must change to keep up with it.  Do you know if you have the wrong job training skills today, you cannot get a job?  But if you are willing to learn new skills, colleges tell us you can get work.  The church of Jesus Christ must learn new skills, do things differently to reach young adults, to draw the un-churched to Christ, or it will die.  We are trying to do that here.  One of the things we are doing to reach the un-churched is having Frank Tanana here, Tiger pitcher.  He will share how his life changed through knowing Jesus Christ.  That is an opportunity to reach friends and family with a message.  Get some tickets and get folks out here.   Thirdly…

III. If We Are Going To See Results For Our Faith We Must Be Obedient. Hebrews says over and over, that these persons acted out their faith by being obedient. One of the greatest stories in the whole bible is the obedient faith of Moses parents. Pharaoh had said throw every male baby into the river to drown.  The Scripture says that by faith Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after his birth, because they saw that the child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. Hebrews 11:23. They risked their lives by not following the command of the government.  But somehow, they said God we will do what the command says, “Thou shall not kill” and we will put our little one in a covered basket and we will leave to you the care of this child.

I wonder if this story of Moses parents cherishing their little child has something to say to us today.  Thousands of little boys were to be thrown into the river to die.  Life was not precious to Pharaoh if it belonged to the Hebrew.  Don’t take the life of an Egyptian baby, but it is ok for a Hebrew baby.  We say that a baby is precious if it is born, but if it is still in the womb, we say it is ok to cast it away.  But is that not simply a change of our attitude and not the true reality of what the child is?

People in our world may have made a choice, to take the life of a child because it was inconvenient. Professional people and the law told them it was alright, but now they wonder what that child may have been. I have counseled with people like that. They need healing.  We may know of young women and men right now who need counseling about making the right choice.  This is a subject that is tough to talk about, but I believe God wants us to care for mothers and the little ones, and fathers too.

I had a service for a little boy Gavin who was only 6 months old and weighed 1.6 pounds.  It was at the twenty four week mark, and it lived one more week.  When I arrived the family was surrounding that little one with tears of love and compassion. The hospital waited till I got there to baptize the baby.  The family held a service for little Gavin.  This child was part of them. They wondered what he might be.  Carolyn and I had a similar experience losing a little one.  Susie and Doug Ford did too.  Many of you here have also.

This church is a caring church.  We reach out in mission locally and around the world.  We visit those who are weak and frail in the rest homes.  We pray for the sick. We reach the youth and children.  I would like us to consider more ministry to women and their families who one way or another have lost a child or struggle with keeping an unborn child.  I was part of a Family Life Center in Ann Arbor that ministered to hundreds.  We can make a difference.  Being where people really need us can bring great results to our faith.

Finally Faith Yields the Fruit of Assurance That We Are Going to Heaven. The bible says Enoch had such a strong faith, that God did not even let him die, He took Him right up to heaven.  Apparently He walked so closely with God that the Lord that going to heaven was simply an extension of his walk on earth.  If we walk daily with God and put our trust in Jesus Christ, God will assure us that we have a place in heaven.

The Words Jesus said, that in my Father’s house are many mansions is not just for funerals.  It is for us now to assure that we will be with God forever.  Walk with God this week. Let the Lord place you in the position you are to be in. Jesus Christ is interceding for our faith right now.  He told Peter, Simon I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail.  If you are like my faith often fails.  But as I do the things God has called me to He bring results I only dreamed of.  What does God want to do in you?
